The 9th Japan Wine Challenge was held from Monday 12th to Friday16th
June 2006 at the Radisson Miyako Hotel in Tokyo. With over 1,600
wines from 19 different countries, the Japan Wine Challenge is
now firmly established as Asia’s most prestigious wine competition.
This year’s judges included, as in past years, top international
wine figures such as Miguel Torres Jr (Spain), Eduardo Chadwick
(Chile), Rowald Hepp (Germany), John Quarisa (Australia) as well
as John Avery MW, Lynne Sherriff MW and David Wrigley MW representing
the Institute of Masters of Wine with which the Japan Wine Challenge
is closely associated in Japan. We were delighted to welcome Andy
Dias Blue, Founder and Executive Director of the San Francisco
International Wine Competition, the largest of its kind in the
US, with which the Japan Wine Challenge has established a partnership.
In all 874 of wines entered this year received a medal with a
most encouraging 77 (5%) Gold, 256 (16%) Silver, 541 (34%) Bronze
Medals and 347 (22%) Seals of Approval. This was a slight increase
in awards from the previous two years, due entirely to the quality
of wines presented.
The Awards Ceremony took place on Wednesday 18th October, Le
Magnolia Room (B1) of the Radisson Miyako Hotel, Shiroganedai.
Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado presented the Trophies
and JWC Awards with Steven Spurrier, Chairman of the Japan Wine
Challenge.
The Madame Bollinger Foundation Award for Best Japanese Judge
was presented by Steven Spurrier, Chairman of the Japan Wine Challenge.
The winner will be given a bursary to attend the Institute of
Masters of Wine Seminar held in January 2007 in Melbourne Sydney.
