| The 10th Japan Wine Challenge
was held from Wednesday 25th to Friday 27th July 2007 at the Sheraton
Miyako Hotel in Tokyo. This year we had 1,700 entries, which is
our highest amount ever. The wines came from 22 different countries.
The Japan Wine Challenge is now firmly established as Asia’s most
prestigious wine competition.
Under the continued Chairmanship of Steven Spurrier (Consultant
Editor, Decanter Magazine) and with Co-Chair John Avery MW (past
Chairman of the Institute of Masters of Wine), top international
wine figures judged outstanding wines and got wonderful results.
Our continued association with the Institute of Masters of Wine,
the San Francisco International Wine Competition, and Mundus Vini
(Continental Europe’s biggest wine show) and our team of expert
judges (both international and local) ensured that all wines were
given the optimum evaluation by a truly international and professional
judging panel.
A total of 924 of the wines entered this year received a medal
with a most encouraging 108 (6.4%) Gold, 258 (15.4%) Silver, 558
(33.3%) Bronze Medals and 385 (23.0%) Seals of Approval. The total
percentage of wines awarded medals increased compared with last
year, confirming the continuing annual increase in the quality
of the wines entered.
The Awards Ceremony took place on Friday 26th October, in the
Sage Room (2F) of the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, Roppongi. We were honored
to have Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado present the Trophies
and JWC Awards.
The Madame Bollinger Foundation Award for Best Japanese Judge
was also presented. The winner will be given a bursary to attend
the Institute of Masters of Wine Seminar to be held in January
2008 in Melbourne Sydney.
