Spier Wines 21 Gables Pinotage 2012

Spier Wines
2014 Trophy for Best New World Red Wine, 2014 Best South African Wine
The importance and influence of the Japan Wine Challenge is illustrated by the amount of New World Wines entered in this competition. It is a huge honour for us to win a Trophy, and also allows us to be rated against the best competitors of other New World countries. Winning the Trophy for the Best New World Red Wine will support our marketing efforts and grants Spier a competitive advantage over our peers from other New World countries. Spier focuses on Pinotage, and it is a great compliment that our flagship wine – 21 Gables Pinotage – won this award. The South African terroir – and specifically where the Spier vineyards are situated – contributes to an elegant and fresh wine style similar to European wines, but also shows more ripe red-fruit flavours typical to the warmer regions of the New World countries. Spier’s winemaking philosophy is to always have balance in every wine. This 21 Gables Pinotage is a single-vineyard wine, and this award reflects not only the quality of the product but also the terroir (arguably the best terroir for Pinotage in South Africa). South Africa could become an important role-player in the world wine industry in the future, due to its perfectly situated geographical location. I think the elegant, fresh, balanced style of wine that we produce is a style that most consumers, regardless of where they live, would appreciate and like. Frans Smit Spier Wines Cellar Master
